In a leaked internal memo to Xbox employees, Asha Sharma, the newly appointed Xbox chief, expressed that the subscription model has become excessively expensive for gamers and emphasized the need for a more favorable value proposition.

Sharma stated, "Game Pass is central to gaming value on Xbox. It’s also clear that the current model isn’t the final one." She acknowledged that short-term pricing has become burdensome for players, indicating that a reevaluation of the pricing structure is necessary to ensure better overall value. Furthermore, she alluded to a long-term vision for the service, which may evolve into a more flexible system that will require time for testing and learning.

Last year, Microsoft implemented a significant price increase for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, raising the monthly fee to $29.99, a staggering 50% increase. Although the company attempted to justify this hike by introducing various enhancements across all tiers of Game Pass, it appears that the price surge has adversely affected its user base.

Reports suggest that part of the rationale behind the price increase was the inclusion of popular titles, such as Call of Duty, into the Game Pass subscription. Nearly two years ago, there were discussions within Microsoft about whether to feature new Call of Duty releases as part of Game Pass due to concerns that this could undermine traditional sales revenue from the franchise. Ultimately, Call of Duty was added to Game Pass in the summer of 2024.

In a recent podcast, Jez Corden from Windows Central hinted at the possibility of Microsoft removing Call of Duty from Game Pass this year, suggesting that such a move could expose flaws in the current pricing strategy. He remarked, "If they take Call of Duty out of Game Pass this year, which is a possibility from what I’ve heard, I think it will kind of reveal some of the cracks in the strategy, possibly."

Sharma also acknowledged the rampant online discussions surrounding the potential for changes to Game Pass pricing, promising to delve deeper into these matters with Xbox employees during a forthcoming meeting. While immediate price adjustments are not expected, it is evident that Sharma is aware of the prevailing issues and is poised to address them in the near future.
